Inside a Sip & Click Party with The Monarch Mag

Posted on September 20 2015

The Monarch Mag is a gem of an online publication from sisters Alison Heden and Tracy McMaster. These editors have a fresh perspective on style, food, travel and beyond, all through the lens of being a mama. Their mantra is to help navigate the motherhood in our vibrant city of Toronto and boy do they deliver - great finds, beautiful images, and a warm sense of humour that leaves you craving their next post.

We recently bonded over some bubbly and that shared notion of creating fun short cuts for busy women when The Monarch Mag hosted the first Smithery Sip & Click in-home party. The Sip & Click concept is an evening of styling with your girlfriends, basically a shopping party in a box! So, as you can imagine, it’s a lot of fun. But it’s also a wonderful way to find out your body shape (only one in ten women know theirs!) and to discover some styling insights for creating your best personal uniform.

We are now booking in the GTA area, with more info hereTara West Photography captured highlights so we could take you inside the premiere night.

We kicked it off with a chat about why body shape is so key in nailing fit & style and how to identify the best Go-To’s for your figure. Body shape is the starting point for personal stylists but not the starting point for e-retail. That irony combined with the fashion industry’s (archaic) singular view of what a woman’s body looks like, is what frustrated us to the point of launching Smithery as a new way to shop online.

We had our measuring stations in full gear, helping women identify their body shape and giving them their key measurements to make it easier to shop with confidence online.

Alison and Tracy discovered they are both a V Shape which is when your shoulders are slightly broader than your hips with a bit of a flatter bum and typically killer legs (no exception here!). The trick for V Shapes is to keep it simple around the shoulders, look for v neck styles to break up the shoulder line, and to add detail around the hips to balance out the upper body. It was fun to watch the penny drop as Alison realized that’s why she never feels quite right in tops with ruffles, graphics, or epaulettes.

We bring a curated selection of pieces to the event so women can see the clothes live and try them on in a no pressure atmosphere. The Monarch Mag top scores included the Two Piece Dress which follows all the rules with a v neck and a horizontal band on the lower body. Tracy snagged The Perfect Zip Pants as another way of bringing visual interest to the lower body for V Shapes.

Guests got their shop on, their hair did by George Gogos and their glam on with fall makeup trends from the incomparable  Green Beauty. The Goods catered with their famous Chuck Norris salad samplers.

We spend a lot of time hunting down fresh brands and doing the research on the most flattering cuts because our job is to take the guesswork out of creating a killer closet of Go-To’s. To be able to sip some bubbly and enjoy a few macarons (ok, a lot of macarons) while watching women enjoy the shopping experience and discover some pieces outside their norm... it’s honestly the best. That’s what a Sip & Click is all about.
