Building A Capsule Wardrobe with Designer & Stylesmith Natalie Chong
Posted on March 28 2017
Our Spring Stylesmiths are renaissance women all kicking butt and takin names in their respective fields. First up is X Shape Natalie Chong, interior designer and founder of Nest Design Studio. You might recognize Natalie as a finalist from Canada's Next Designer competition. We were drawn like a moth to a flame to her dynamic energy and signature aesthetic.
That aesthetic was also reflected in the pieces she chose to take home with her and that makes for a perfect lesson in capsule wardrobes. Ready?
A capsule is an edited group of pieces that have high mix & match potential so you can make at least a week's worth of outfits from 6-7 building blocks. When we asked Natalie what her top fashion challenge was, she explained her desire to simplify and streamline her closet with classic pieces in a minimalist palette that will give her tons of mileage. Challenge accepted!
A successful capsule is made up of 1 layering piece, 2 bottoms, 3 tops and up to 4 accessories that help transform the combinations. Dresses are a bonus item that extend the life of your capsule. For Natalie, we built the following collection - note how you can draw a line in any direction through the pyramid and it makes an outfit. When Natalie adds a cool necklace or a scarf or statement bag, the looks get pulled apart even more. This pyramid approach to capsules is a trick from our friend and image consultant, Suzanne Colmer of Your Shop Girl.
